Google Datacenter Update Propogation

Postby korprit » Wed May 13, 2009 7:50 pm

most of us are familiar with the google dance and updates of that nature, but i'm wondering if anyone has experience with something i am looking at now.

a client hired me to get them to #1 for a phrase. it hit #1 literally an hour ago. the client, on the east coast (i am on the west), is not seeing this. they still see their old position.

so the question is, how long for the east coast to get the update that i am currently seeing?

Hrm, could be years. Better send them my way and I'll take care of em.

I dunno, usually within a few days to a week. I'd just direct him to scroogle.org (not .com it's porn) to look it up or send him to one of those SERP checkers to check for his phrase. Just make sure he's #1 on whatever tool you send him, they all scrape from different areas.

Oh, and you know this already, but make sure he's logged out as he'll be getting those stupid "smart" listings otherwise.

Played with the Google Wonder Wheel yet? It's mad cool. Gonna be on all the blogs as the "next keyword research tool"

I just like clicking around on it.

well the ranking slipped back to old position....not sure why it was #1 for a bit then fell...unless it's dancing.....bit frustrating and nerve racking lol

I blogged about it and a couple of other "hidden in plain sight" Google keyword research tools: http://onlinecashgenerator.com/niche-ma ... -keywords/

so did i hehehe....

before i get side tracked, an update on this thread....and something REALLY odd i am seeing. i noticed the client was searching for the phrase in all caps. the screenshot they sent me also had a different number of results.

on a whim i searched for the same term, but in all caps. They are not number one. i search all lower case....number 1! ....i know plural does this...but all caps?!?!?!

further oddity. i am in oregon and assumed it was a datacenter issue that they cannot see it on the east coast....but got the response "my partner in california did searches from their office and are not seeing it either".

they have held number one for more than 24 hours now from where i sit (clear cache)....why the F won't it propogate? why the F are caps giving different search results?!

I've noticed that in Statcounter - different case, different page. I also get annoying results when statcounter says it picked up a visit from page 1 but when I look like 10 minutes later the site is on page 3 (from where I'm looking). Rarely the other way around btw

It would be nice to see a "one world one google.com" and then show different data centres like google.es for me, google.co.uk for the rest of the Brits stuck in the rain (ahem...) etc if we want to check on geo targeted sites and results.

But then again.... dream on...

an update, some observations, and a REALLY cool tool.

first the tool. this site gives a check box list of A LOT OF THE DATA CENTERS. usable for tracking rankings across the nation....potentially globally (anyone verify an ip range? *hint - i'm asking you tel ;) * )

http://www.seocritique.com/datacentertool/

since i hit the #1 spot briefly on wednesday, the site dropped, then was back to #1 on thursday. no one else could see it outside of oregon, and when i checked the tool above, my datacenter was the only one seeing the ranking. which verified what i was getting reports on.

slowly, i have been watching, more and more datacenters are recognizing the #1 spot. kinda fun to watch to be honest. at the moment, for ever 16 datacenters, i see about 7 that have the new ranking, and 9 that do not. that number has been increasing. if this were mapped geographically instead of by IP...it might be even more interesting :D

looks like the datacenter propogation takes far longer than i (or anyone i have talked to - including a couple seasoned consultants) imagined. i'm 3 days shy of a week and it's almost 50% propogated. helps with forcasting ranking for non local clients :D

I'm seeing IP ranges for the data centres of:

64.233.*.*
66.102.*.*
66.249.*.*
72.14.*.*
209.85.*.*
216.239.*.*

Can't see any way of changing them.

I'm guessing these are the main US datacentres, which are the ones I want to be seeing considering that's the country I'm targeting. Interesting, I checked one of my weight loss sites for its KW and its hovering between page 2 and 4 on different centres. So progress is being made and I couldn't see it as I can only see my site on page 3 here.

Excellent find Kor, thanks!
